Claire Mason carves a variety of stone. She mainly uses stone from the Portland Purbeck hills in Dorset because it is so responsive and versatile; it can lend to a gutsy textural piece with lovely deep obvious chisel marks, or refined from chisel to files to sand paper and polished to a super tactile smooth finish. It is perfect for letter carving.
Claire uses traditional methods of carving; using a mallet and chisel, to produce a unique piece of work for each of her clients. Working in mixed mediums that include stone, slate and bronze, she applies her skills to produce a range of work including garden sculpture, bronzes, memorial headstones, creative letter carving, inscriptions, unusual gifts and signs.
