The Sundial

In 2020 I was commissioned to carve a sundial to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of a couple in Brockenhurst in the New Forest.

They wanted to use slate and we discussed their options. I recommended using Welsh slate and they embarked on an extensive research project to find their perfect slate. We discussed the positioning, the dimensions and the logistics of fixing it to the exterior wall. The quarry delivered their chosen slate to my workshop and carving began.

The client wanted the phrase Quo Tempus (time flies) to feature on the sundial and I provided an initial, to-scale drawing for their approval.

This was one of the most technically challenging pieces I have designed. In order to be successful, an overall elegance needed to be achieved by creating a balance between the borders, the spacing and the size, depth and weighting of the Roman numerals and lettering.

The sundial was wall-hung and going to be viewed from a distance. Of course, it also needed to be functional.

In order to complete the project, I met with mathematician, Peter Ransom MBE who calculated the exact measurements for the unique vertical positioning of the sundial. The project also involved collaboration with brilliant engineer, Ted French who produced the stainless steel gnomon and beautifully crafted bespoke brackets to hang the dial. Together they created a truly amazing piece that celebrated such a special and personal occasion.

We wanted a sundial to celebrate our 50th, wedding anniversary which meant searching for a sculptor/carver. Fortunately, Claire leapt at the opportunity and her enthusiasm shone throughout the whole project. In addition to her terrific skill, she is prompt and her rates are most acceptable. These qualities, coupled to a lovely and perceptive personality, means she is a winner all round and I am lucky to have found her. I have no hesitation whatsoever, in recommending her to anyone.
