Stone carver and sculptor

Claire Mason has been stone carving for many years since leaving Art College. She qualified in Carving and Gilding at the London College of Furniture and began designing and making pieces to commission. Claire currently carves unique pieces of sculpture for the garden as well as working to commission.

Claire has exhibited for a number of years in the Hampshire Artist Exhibition and has been selected to exhibit her sculptures in the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens near Romsey, Hampshire, as part of the ‘Art in the Garden’ exhibition. Claire was also invited to carve with the Winchester Cathedral Stone Masons in the Winchester Stone Carving Festival raising funds for the Cathedral restoration project.

She also runs beginners stone carving weekend classes in the beautiful location of Old Bursledon, Hampshire.

Commissions

Claire enjoys working closely with her clients. She will usually meet with you to leisurely gather and develop your ideas. Your individual design is hand-drawn on her drawing board, for you to add to or amend if you wish. She then transfers the design onto the stone and begins carving with mallets and chisels. Claire can meet with you in stages and will keep you informed along the way.

Recent commissions include a bespoke sundial, a fern sculpture for a New Zealand-inspired garden and a contemporary carving for a long-missing statue in a parish church.

Classes and events

Claire Mason runs beginners stone carving courses over a weekend in 18 acres of beautiful historic parkland beside the Greyladyes Arts Foundation in Bursledon, Hampshire. These courses can help to provide a relaxing weekend away from the stresses of life in peaceful surroundings and with great pubs and accommodation nearby, whilst also developing a new skill.

There are usually 5-8 participants and the stone, tools and equipment are provided.  These weekend stone carving courses also make unique presents or gifts.
