King Alfred at Winchester Cathedral
As a visitor at the start of the Winchester Stone Carving Festival, Claire Mason was approached by the organiser who casually enquired about her interest in stone carving. After a brief conversation the organiser was keen to invite her to join the selected group of Stone Carvers for the remaining two days.
The event, organised by Winchester Cathedral, was a way of raising funds for the cathedral restoration project. Carvers were given the theme ‘Kings and Scribes’ and had three days to conceive and complete a sculpture which would then be sold in a public auction at the end of the second day.
Claire chose to carve a bust of King Alfred and had two days to complete her carving. Claire’s sculpture raised £500.00 in the public auction and the bust of King Alfred was shipped to Perth, Australia.
